FAQ

What are your office hours?

Typically, appointments are on Wednesdays, 8 – 12 noon and 2 – 7 pm. Also, we can talk on the weekend!

I work Saturdays from 12 to 5.

More hours are available by appointment.

How long is a typical session?
A typical session is 50 minutes long, allowing me to take notes to remember what we discussed and prepare for our next session. Please let me know in our initial contact if you want or need a more extended session.
What do I do to get started?

Please complete the form at the bottom of the website to schedule your free consultation call. We’ll schedule your first appointment if we both feel we fit well. No referral is needed.

Do you accept insurance?
I accept United Healthcare. I am out-of-network (OON) with all other insurance companies. If you have OON coverage, I provide electronic documentation (a “Superbill”) to submit to your carrier for partial reimbursement. Most OON plans reimburse 50-80% of the session.
Can I cancel an appointment? Do you have a cancellation policy?

The best work happens when you are consistent, so I hold a steady spot for you in my weekly calendar. However, we can undoubtedly reschedule your appointment if you need to do so.

If you cancel your session less than 24 hours before it starts or miss it, you will receive a charge for the entire session reserved for you. You get one freebie per year to use for any reason. You can cancel via phone or email.

I will cancel your first session if your paperwork is not completed by 10 pm the night before your first appointment. I need that paperwork completed to be ready to give you my best as a therapist, so we’ll need to reschedule if your paperwork is incomplete.

What is a free initial phone consultation?
This consultation is your opportunity to learn more about me and get answers to questions my website does not answer. I will also ask you questions to ensure we are a good fit. It is up to 15 minutes long, and please feel free to ask me whatever you would like. I want you to feel comfortable working with me to get the most out of your therapy!
What kind of clients do you work with?
I work with anyone who is an adult – I mean that literally. If you are not that much of an ‘adult’ yet, don’t worry; we will work on it! I’m comfortable with people of all ages and kinds. I find everyone fascinating in their own way.
What can I expect in the first session?
You can expect a lot of questions. I will be curious to get to know you. Feel free to tell me as much or as little as you want. I would also like to know what motivates you to come to therapy and what drives you to improve. We will outline some goals for you to work on, and I will help you with that!
What if I don't really 'click' with you?
No problem, that can certainly happen. Hopefully, you would have let me know if you had a concern, felt bothered by something, or wanted more or less of something in the session. Sometimes, even the best intentions and the friendliest people do not click with each other. I would ask you if you would like to continue therapy with someone else. If you want to continue with someone else, I will try to find someone who might be a better match.
What are the risks and benefits of doing therapy?

As with almost everything in life, this process has risks and benefits. A possible risk is that you may become upset, emotional, or triggered. A benefit is that this is how people grow and change – by encountering some distress and feeling challenged.

Therapy is similar to lifting weights. For the muscle to grow, it needs to tear first. You have to follow up on your exercise with good nutrition, like loading up with protein, to assist the torn muscle to recover and get bigger and stronger than before. That’s where some homework assignments in between sessions would come in!

Is our work confidential?

In most cases, our work is confidential. The only exceptions are if there is a situation involving harm to yourself or harm to another person or if there is a court order. Rest assured that even if there is a possibility of any impact on you, we will discuss it and see what we can do.

Have you been in therapy yourself?
Yes, I have, for a few sessions. It was life-changing and very eye-opening, and I appreciated the experience. It was good to see what it’s like to be a client myself.
Do you take notes?
I usually take notes right after the session to keep everything fresh in my mind. There may be times when I will take notes in the session with your permission if that will help you with a plan of action and focus you mentally and emotionally until our next session.
Am I allowed to ask personal questions?
Sure thing. You always have the right to do that. Whether I answer or not depends on what would be best for you and if it’s in your best interest.
Cats or Dogs?
Easy, both!
Beach or mountain?
Hmm, that’s a hard one. I live in Florida, and I love it. You can basically smell the ocean every time you step outside. But I also love mountains. One of my goals is to get a house in North Carolina next year to be closer to that kind of nature.
You said earlier that you love to run. Just curious – how long can you go without running?
Three days max!
